Southwest Texas - McDonald Observatory and Big Bend National Park
The plan: Fly into Alpine, E38, on Friday February 9, landing by 4:00 pm to check into the Hampton Inn and immediately go to dinner at the Reata Restaurant (rated #1 restaurant in Alpine on TripAdvisor) followed quickly by heading to the McDonald Observatory, which is a one hour drive away in the mountains. Arrive in time for the Star Party at the observatory that evening. www.mcdonaldobservatory.org
Return to the Hampton Inn hotel in Alpine approximately 10:30pm.
Saturday, Feb 10th, a long day planned: drive towards Terlingua and enter the Big Bend National Park. Drive up to Chisos Basin Visitor Center (2 hours from the hotel), spend time there hiking and enjoying the views. Leave the Chisos mountains to arrive at the Starlight Theatre www.starlighttheatre.com for dinner. After dinner there would be a 1.5 hour drive back to Alpine.
This could also be called a Texas mountains winter tour. Terlingua average temps are between 45F low to 65F high, but we are planning on spending time at higher altitudes. Come enjoy some dry clear air!
